Give and Take Day in Ross Township, Monroe County, September 20th

Ross Township Residents are invited to drop off unwanted items and take usable items all for free on Saturday, September 20th from 11am-4pm at the VanBuskirk-Haney Park , Anchorage Rd, Saylorsburg, PA.  A Give & Take Day is a great opportunity for people to donate unwanted items that are taking up room in the home and garage, and reduce disposing of usable items to a landfill. The event, organized by Close the Loop, is the first of its kind in Monroe County.  To learn more about the event visit the website at:  www.closetheloop.com.  Items donated will then be displayed for others to re-use, rather than be thrown away. Alternately if you need something for the home or garden come along and find something for free!

All Ross township residents are welcome and it is guaranteed to be a fun day out; there will be refreshments and a competition, activities for children, plus information on recycling, composting and much more!  Close the Loop is hoping that more townships will adopt this type of event as part of their annual cleanup days and give residents a chance to reduce, reuse & recycle before throwing items away.  Volunteers are needed for the event, if you are able to help out, please call 570.629.8414 or just show-up on the day of the event!

How a Give & Take Day Works

In the morning residents are invited to bring along unwanted household and garden items that are in good condition. In the afternoon (givers and non givers) then have the option to take what they feel they can re-use from the items available, and it’s all free of charge.
Everyone who brings items will be automatically entered into a prize draw to win one of a number of prizes we have to give away — gift certificates, other donated items and recycled goods.

UPDATE FROM THIS EVENT:

The final tally was an estimated total of 3,275 pounds of home, garden, furniture, bikes, washing machine, exercise equipment and many miscellaneous items dropped off.  I must say the most unusual thing dropped off was an electronic leg massager – on it’s way to an elderly home to ease their sore legs!  JMost everything that was given stayed in the community and is being put to good use, not filling up a landfill.   Close the Loop would like to thank Ross Township for being the 1st in the county (perhaps the state) to support an innovative idea to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.  Also, RSVP volunteers, Kinsley & Weis Supermarkets for donating gift certificates, Reach Recycling for their donations, and www.freecycle.org for keeping good stuff out of the landfills every day in communities across the globe. Thank you again for being a part of the solution!!

Give and Take Day planned for Ross Township
By ADAM McNAUGHTON

Do you have unused stuff you have been meaning to get rid of but instead it is just taking up room?

Most people do, and a lot of that stuff ends up getting thrown out and going into landfills.

That's why Rita Lacey, of Chestnuthill Township, organized a Give and Take Day event for Ross Township residents this Saturday at VanBuskirk-Haney Park, off Anchorage Road.

"The idea is to reuse items rather than put them in a landfill," Lacey said. "Our goal is to try to landfill nothing at the end of the day."

A Give and Take Day is a way to encourage reuse of unwanted items in the community. The event works a little like a yard sale, but without money changing hands. It's a chance to clean out closets of good-condition items and pick up others that you might need.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 20, Ross Township residents can bring unwanted but usable items to the park and drop them off. At 1 p.m. the donated items will be available for pickup to Township residents. By keeping unwanted items in the hands of people that can use them, they stay out of landfills.

Anyone who donates items early in the day will be entered in drawings for gift certificates, organic food from local farms and recycled goods. The only rule is that items must be in decent condition and usable and the event is only open to Ross Township residents.

Lacey says she heard about Give and Take Days after similar events became popular in the United Kingdom. If the Ross Township event is a success, she hopes to duplicate the Give and Take Day in other area townships.

As for just what may be donated at the event on Saturday, that is anyone's guess.

"I have no idea what to expect. It's going to be anything and everything, such as household items, games, toys and usable clothes," Lacey said, adding that unclaimed clothes will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Saturday's event will take place during Ross Township's annual fall cleanup days. Residents can bring trash items such as metal, tires, appliances and general trash to the rear of the municipal building on Anchorage Road near the park on Friday and Saturday — there is a disposal fee for tires, refrigerators and air conditioners, but all other trash is free to drop off.

If all goes well at the Give and Take Day, there will be less usable trash from Ross Township going into landfills.
